MEN’S SOCCER CAPTURES CONSOLATION TITLE AT HARTNELL TOURNAMENT
SALINAS, CA-Coach Al Garcia's Allan Hancock College men's soccer team opened the 2003 season successfully this past weekend, taking the consolation championship of the prestigious Hartnell Tournament.
The Bulldogs (2-1) dropped a tough 1-0 decision to City College of San Francisco in the opening-round game, then rallied for back-to-back wins over Canada College (6-2) and West Valley (2-2, 5-4 on penalty kicks) for the consolation trophy.
In the contest with CCSF, the Bulldogs played into misfortune, out-shooting the Rams by a lopsided 23-3 margin, but coming up empty on the scoreboard. Against Canada, AHC broke the spell with a big offensive effort, bolting to a 5-0 lead before posting the 6-2 victory. Six different Bulldog players scored goals in the win.
In the consolation championship match, the Bulldogs battled West Valley to a 2-2 tie, then won it on the penalty-kick tie-breaker, when goalie George Hunter (Fr., Mariposa) blocked the Vikings' final shot. Sophomore forward John Mooney (Atascadero) was Hancock's top scorer for the tournament with two goals and two assists.
